Mavis Lane Flowers is run by Kay, an experienced florist. What began as an outlet for therapeutic creativity grew and evolved into a beautiful way to live, through creating bespoke flowers for her clients throughout Yorkshire. Kay is based from her studio workshop in the tiny East Yorkshire Village of Barmby on the Marsh.
Yorkshire Brides | Weddings popped Kay in the hot-seat!
How did you start your business? When I was 10 years old, we made a dried flower arrangement at school - I loved it! But life took me in another direction and I was worried about opting for a creative career. Fast forward to 2020 and I wasn’t worried any more. The time came to give myself something beautiful and fulfilling to do for a job! I have trained at Askham Bryan College in York and I keep myself up to date via the wonderful professional training offered by local and regional floral artists such as Leafy Couture.
How did you get involved within the wedding industry? Inspired by what I saw on social media and in wedding magazines - I’d not seen large scale installations before, and they blew my mind! Previously I’d love to get creative by seeing what wonderful items I could flower for gifts, but I wanted something more. Although I’m not a large-scale florist - I was inspired to want to flower everything I saw, and weddings fit that bill perfectly! Creating tablescapes and backdrops is just wonderfully engaging.
What makes your service unique? I think my unique offering is that I am a straightforward person and it reflects in my service. Let’s have a chat - I’ll give you a quote to review- see if you like it and me!
What can a couple expect from you in the build up to their big day? In the week before their special day I’ll be in my workshop - I’ll communicate to them that their flowers have arrived and I’ll send them a sneak peek of them conditioning, and I’ll be as excited about transforming those raw ingredients into their big day designs. I’ll liaise with the venue, suppliers and co- ordinator so they can sit back and enjoy the lead into their day.
What is your favourite part of a wedding day? Delivery starts with bouquets and buttons, so I can show them how to carry their flowers. My favourite part is knowing that they are happy with their bouquet - it inspires the creativity of setting out the venue!
Can you advise your booking process? I’m led by how closely my clients want to work and there’s no pressure to book. We all work best in different ways and have different drives and motivators. I want my couples to feel confident about having their questions answered without the need to send a booking fee. Tell me as much as you can about what you’d like, via email, text, in person or whatever. I’ll prepare you a base quote. If you like that and feel comfortable, my booking fee is tiered based on an intimate wedding or a larger one but is no more than £150. Once that's done, we work together to finalise your flowers and build your vision!
Are you appearing at any wedding fairs, where our couples can meet you in person? I’ll be exhibiting at The Country Park Wedding Fayre on 3rd March in East Yorkshire.
Also at The Quirky Wedding Fayres Earl of Doncaster show on 23rd March.
Special offer - Book me at either of those Fayres for £50.00 booking fee.
