Let the time of your life be captured without a care in the world

Nic Shuttleworth is a multi award-winning Documentary Photographer capturing families, weddings, events and brands - based in Yorkshire.

Yorkshire Brides | Weddings popped Nic in the hot-seat to discuss all things photography!

How long have you been a Photographer within the Wedding Industry?

I photographed my first wedding back in 2002 for a friend of the family, back when everything was shot on film. I loved seeing everyone come together from near and far to celebrate the love of two people and really enjoyed capturing the genuine moments of joy, humour and warmth between friends and families. It was wonderful!

I then had a slight shift from photography whilst I worked as an Art Director for many years, picking up a camera again around 2015 when my children were small, fascinated by their every move! I fell in love again with making photographs and spent many years learning with some of the most highly acclaimed documentary photographers in the world!

I’ve photographed weddings and events since 2021 with a storytelling approach and strive to make real photographs of loved ones, families, and friendships that are filled with narrative and meaning.

How did you get into Photography?

I studied photography at University, back when everything was shot on film, I learned how to use a camera, lights and develop film in the dark room, many a happy day spent! I was fascinated by the work of Martin Parr and photojournalism, telling real stories through an honest lens.

What would you describe your photography style as?

I’m a documentary photographer, which is a candid style of photography, capturingmoments as they unfold in a natural and unposed manner. This allows my couples to enjoy themselves, get lost in the occasion and allow the genuine moments of their day be documented without a care in the world. My editing style is to retain a true to life feel, my work is very moment driven, striving to make real photographs of families, friends and loved ones that matter. All of my wedding collections include a full set of colour and black and white images to treasure.

We love to find this out from our Featured Suppliers...what is your favourite part of the wedding day?

I love after the ceremony when the newly married couple greet all of their friends and family for the first time, there’s lots of wonderful moments of emotion, and often the first time everyone relaxes and starts to become themselves.

Describe your signature shot?

I wouldn’t say I have a signature shot as every single wedding is unique. The way I see and understand people would be my signature style. It’s this sense of photography, as ‘storytelling’ that lies at the heart of my approach, I’m fascinated in capturing something truly unique and special about each moment of the day whether that be the big moments like the first kiss or the smaller moments in between that may otherwise be forgotten.

When working with couples, what do you value the most?

Their trust and faith in me to capture their most special day. I’m forever grateful.

What can a couple expect from you on the day of the wedding?

I think these words best come from a recent client review:

Nic is so calm, organised, reliable, trustworthy and great-humoured - she's just so wonderful to be around in emotionally-heightened situations and she is so sensitive to how people experience their events. This is a part of her job that she takes very seriously and it feeds into her work. She is highly intuitive and knows exactly where to be and when, and understands the needs of her photography subjects.

Nic has a clever knack of being everywhere without being intrusive, and pads about silently like a ninja! On the morning of our wedding, Nic arrived early and documented our bridal prep at my parents’ house. Not only were some of my favourite photos of my parents and my chief bridesmaid taken at this time, but also Nic's presence was very calming and lightened the mood for my anxious Mum and Dad.

During the ceremony and the tea and speeches in the chapel afterwards, Nic managed to place herself in all the right places at all the right times, and captured our marriage and celebration so beautifully. We never wanted the posed line-ups of traditional wedding photo shoots, and we knew that Nic would take the natural, story-telling photos that we wanted instead. Nic absolutely nailed it, and we are so delighted with our photos.”

It’s your BIG day! So let’s capture the time of your lives!
